Warning of HMRC Scam

Date published: 26th October 2016

We have received a number of reports from residents throughout Fife receiving calls from someone reporting to be from HMRC, advising that money is owed and asking for bank and national insurance details. Karin Anderson, Bureau Co-ordinator at Cowdenbeath office advised of a number of concerns raised by residents in the area who had received such phone calls between Saturday and Tuesday.

HMRC DO NOT call you if you owe them money.

Never give out your bank details if you are unsure who the caller is. You can call HMRC yourself to query if you owe any money.

If you get a caller at the door, make sure you see identification. If you are still in doubt phone the company yourself. Look up the number do not use the one the caller gives you.

If you believe you have been a victim of a scam report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

If you have given out your bank details contact your bank immediately.
